Is there a way to bring people together, compromise, and accomplish mutual goals without compromising your values or core beliefs? We should all take a lesson from Sergeant York.
Gary Cooper’s portrayal of a Tennessee native back in 1917 was drafted into WWI, unable to get out of it as a conscientious objector, he returned a hero. As he arrived overseas, he stated his willingness to die for his country, but not to kill for it. After seeing firsthand the tragedy that is war, he contemplated teachings from the bible, specifically, “Render that unto Caesar which is Caesar’s, and unto God, that which is God’s.”
From there he surmised he would find a solution to his dilemma. He ended up killing a large number of German’s and capturing a little over a hundred others. When asked why he had a change of heart, he said he didn’t. His reasoning, he saw the senseless slaughtering going on and felt that in killing those people he would be able to save lives. Peace through strength. God playing a role in heroic actions, not a message that those producing pictures today would be eager to jump on.
No matter how you feel about religion, war, or politics in general, there is always a solution. Given the right perspective and understanding what the problem actually is.
Be the solution!
God Bless the USA!
